Isla del Sol - a quick visit, but a funnier journey to La Paz! :-)

Copacabana is the perfect point to pay a visit to Isla del Sol (Sun Island), an Island that was worshipped by the Incas who considered Lake Titicaca to be a sacred lake. As such, they built a temple, whose ruins remain on the northern part of the island. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to reach the north of the island as I had only half a day available to go to the Island, and this is a full-day tour, I therefore headed to the Southern part where the Inca Staircase and fountain remain... For me, the main point of the visit was not really to see more ruins. Indeed, once one has seen the Macchu Pichu, further ruins appear a bit blank... The highlight was to navigate on this sacred lake, and enjoy the blue waters and landscapes... which was not really possible as the weather was not best and the air bitterly cold! I tend to forget that we are 3700m above sea level! :)

After 3 hours spent on the boat, it was time to get a direct bus to La Paz. The first bus was full, so I was put onto a second one, which was not as classy but I guess top class for Bolivia! :) After one hour of travelling, we stopped at a town called San Pedro something, and we were told that we had to get off the bus and take a boat to cross this part of the lake. There would also be a police control and we have to show our passport. Apparently these controls are frequent, and I noticed since then that there are police stations at the border of each big city (which stop vehicles, with barrier and stuff!) - not to mention that there is police everywhere, it feels a bit like being in a country hit by internal warfare... Anyways, there were 2 German girls that did not have their passport, 2 UK guys that had no money, and my passport was in my bag on the roof of the truck (the guy did not want to take it off the roof...). So he told us to stay in the bus, pulled the curtains, and asked us to stay still and hidden while crossing the lake! (!!!). Which we did... and nothing happened indeed, it seems a bit strange that it is so easy! I ended up giving a few Bolivianos to the guys from the UK for them to be safe as it seems more ok to have no passport than no money!!
